State training centre

First established in 1960 by the Craft Council, the centre is now run by the Industrial Development Board. The objective of the centre was to introduce new technology and training for the crafts people in the village. In the beginning many young people received training at the centre. At present however, despite the continued appointment of an instructor who visits once a week, no training is carried out. Pots are manufactured by a few women living near the centre using raw materials and infrastructure provided by the state for a 65% share of the profits from sales. Instead of the traditional hand turned wheel, the centre has 6 foot peddled wheels, an electric wheel and a pug mill to process clay. Previously all forms of domestic and even ornamental pottery had been produced. Today, a variety of small pots for boiling milk and placing protective charms, tills, flower pots and other objects are produced sometimes on orders placed to meet the demands of the present market for pottery.
