During the 26 year period (1643-1669) no ships from Denmark arrived in the colony. Yet there was a lively trade at Tranquebar in this period. Foreign ships were captured and then used in the Danish trade. Local coins for small change were still needed as can be seen from the many different types of lead coins minted. In the year about 1652 - 1670 the coins have as their design a Danish provincial coat of arms.
There may be several different bases for the provincial coat of arms, but it is best to look to the coins. Nearly all provincial coats of arms appearing on the big silver coins of Christian IV also appear on the Tranquebar coins.

Read the article about Udmøntningen i Trankebar under Frederik III in the library (In Danish). You can see all the types in the Catalog.
The first 1 and 2 kas in copper are from Frederik III, where the 1 kas are without year and the 2 kas with the year 1667. Certainly it was too expensive or perhaps there was not enough copper, because the next 20 years all the coins are minted in lead and then from 1689 all the kas-coins are minted in copper.

A large part of the coins of Tranquebar, all through the
period, has been minted on other coins, mostly on other, obsolete types of
Tranquebar coins.. Sometimes it is possible to read the earlier type which
means it is possible to make the order of minting. The photo show 1 kas lead of Frederik III with 9 hearts (UBJ 111) struck on Elephant (UBJ 98). You can find a list of known re-struck coins in my book Danish India, Tranquebar Coins, Market Values 1996. |
