Tokens struck for local use in Ceylon

The majority of copper tokens were issued by Coffee Mills on the island (though often manufactured in England) during the years when there was a dearth of small change prior to 1870. A minority were struck later, until the early 1880´s.

George Stuart & Co.: Wekande Mills, Colombo
From 1843 Messrs. Steuart countermarked local coinage (G. S. & Co) for use at values of 6 pence and 4 1/2 pence. Their tokens were issued in 1881, at a time when 1,300 hands were employed. These tokens, dated 1843, were authorised by the manager, Charles Hendry.

Scott  Co.: Borella Mills, Colombo
Brass, 7,87 gram. 6 pence, 1859
Obv.: Stag´s head: Legend around; A  B . SCOTT & Co - COLOMBO
Rev.: Elephant standing left: Legend around; COFFFEE STORE - 1859
Messrs. A & B Scott & Co. occupied the Borella Mills until Mr. Binny Scott sold the firm to Alstons, Scott & Co. in 1871.
These tokens were valued at 6 pence until the currency reform of 1870, then re-valued to 25 cents.
