The British in Ceylon |
In 1796 Dutch possessions in Ceylon were surrended to the English forces. In 1798 the island was made a Crown Colony and its first Governor appointed. In 1802 Ceylon was formally ceded to Britain by the Dutch in the Peace of Amiens. It was not until 1816 that supremacy over the interior of the island passed from the indigenous Rajas of Kandy to the British.
